Georgian Cottage transformation:

This Georgian cottage had been extended on three separate occasions over the years. While the additional space was certainly usable, the layout had never been fully considered, leaving the house feeling disjointed and inefficient — a home with real potential, but one that wasn’t quite living up to it.

Working closely with the architect, and in collaboration with the clients, a new layout was carefully developed and refined. Through a series of considered design tweaks and practical adjustments, the house has been transformed into a home that now flows effortlessly from room to room, with improved proportions, clearer circulation, and an abundance of natural light throughout.

One of the key challenges was the original circulation. To access the stairs, you had to walk from one end of the house to the other, travel up a level, and then walk back across the property again — a daily frustration that made the layout feel unnecessarily long and awkward.

The solution was to introduce a new central staircase, running vertically through the heart of the house. Beginning in the newly converted loft and continuing all the way down to ground level, this intervention has created a striking entrance hall and, more importantly, a clear and logical connection between every level of the home.

Two previously unconverted loft spaces were also opened up and linked, forming an entirely new storey within the property. The result is a beautifully integrated additional level that sits comfortably within the character of this period home, adding both space and functionality while respecting its Georgian heritage.
